Here are some steps you can follow to remove paint from wood floors:
1. Apply paint remover to the floor and scrape up the softened paint.
2. Remove the rest of the paint with a floor sander.
3. Use a safe, citrus-based paint remover to remove much of the paint before using the sander.
4. If you prefer to use paint thinner, open any windows in the area you’ll be working in, soak a small section of a rag with paint thinner, and rub the paint stain with the part of the rag soaked in thinner.
5. Continue rubbing the stain until all of the paint is gone.
You can also try these other methods:
- Mix a dish wash soap in room temperature water. Using a cloth, wet the entire wood floor before paint removal. Let it sit for a few minutes; this will loosen the paint a bit and ease removal. Grab the rag and scrape off the paint gently. Now, use a dry cloth to remove excess paint or moisture left behind.
- Scrapping of hardened paint: You can use a plastic putty knife to remove water-based paint without damaging the surface of the wood floor. You can as well use a hammer to tap the putty knife in case of hard paint spots.
- Use warm water and mild soap to gently scrub the affected area with a soft-bristled brush or sponge. You can also try using a paint thinner or mineral spirits, but be sure to test it on an inconspicuous area first and use it sparingly.
